The program will also feature two award-winning repertory works. Shift is a dance in four sections developed in collaboration with lighting designer Ben Tusher.  With music by Zoe Keating, this work for eight dancers explores humanity's desire to lift and support one another, both physically and emotionally. In Sitting on January, a perennial audience favorite set to music of Bela Fleck, dancers ponder the new year. The work won a Lester Horton Award, Los Angeles’ top dance prize, in 2005.

Backhausdance brings to the stage the athleticism and grace that has propelled Orange County's premier dance company into the forefront of modern dance since its inception in 2003. This company is a unique mix of physically powerful, socially diverse, beautifully trained dancers with an aggressive approach to motion. The company currently consists of 12 dancers all of whom hold BFA degrees in Dance Performance from Chapman University.

Jennifer Backhaus draws on many traditions of music and dance to create detailed, meticulously sculpted dances, high-speed expressions that burn hot and fade away as audiences thrill and delight in their splendor. She integrates the rich sounds of world music with a tempo driven rush of dance creating lush layers of imagery. Her energy and stamina in creating new works keeps her dancers and her audiences intrigued and eager for more. Jennifer’s works have been commissioned and produced by a number of dance organizations, most recently the Los Angeles Ballet, which just announced they will stage another of her works in the coming season.

Backhaus began her career as a gymnast, leading to an early introduction to dance. Continuing her education at Chapman University, she began studying modern dance, igniting a passion that continues to this day. She received a B.F.A in Dance from Chapman University where she graduated cum laude and received multiple awards for choreography. Following graduation, Jennifer was invited to join Donna Sternberg and Dancers with whom she performed numerous roles that were created for her and received praise from the LA Times and Dance Magazine. During this time, Jennifer also performed as a guest artist with Orange County Regional Ballet and Project 21.
